OF THE NIGHT

She dropped back against her door with a thump. Her heart felt as if it got stuck in her throat, and she could literally feel all the color suck right out of her face.
   “How-How did—How did you...?
“Get in?” he asked with an arched eyebrow. “Well, dear Lilly, you let me in, remember?”
She shook her head profusely. “No. No, that’s not true. I even locked—”
“—Words spoken cannot be taken back, Lilly. Once permission is granted, no door can keep me out, and you gave me your permission or I wouldn’t be standing here now.”
He stepped to her and she found herself going through her knees a little, cowering. She stared with “bug-eyes” up at his stark, handsome face as he raised arms and braced black-gloved palms flat against the door on either side of her shoulders as his eyes slowly rose and looked into her eyes. She felt as if he could see straight into her soul!
“So, my dear, have you enjoyed your little taunt this evening?” he inquired with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Personally,” his fingers made little work of the knot in her scarf, “you were intentionally vexing me to incite my jealousy. Tell me true…is that so?” he asked as he lay the two parts aside before his fingertips gently touched the twin bumps in her neck where he had bitten her.
She couldn’t help but tremble as a sensation rippled through her the moment he touched her.
“What?” she got out breathlessly, in disbelief. It was hard to think straight when Marten DeGarnier was caressing her skin!
“If it was your intention to provoke my possessiveness, you’ve succeeded,” he said in a hushed tone. “I have to admit, though, that these emotions are rather new to me and I’m not entirely sure if I care for them.   They confuse me. It’s a quandary that has benefited Brogue this night.”
   “W-What did you say?”
“It would have otherwise not gone well for him were I not in this state of befuddlement.”
She slowly frowned as she felt this sudden sense of protectiveness for Ken, and it seemed to give her strength. “Was that a veiled threat against Ken?”
His fingers paused against the side of her neck as he looked into her eyes. “It’s not intended to be veiled.”
“Listen,” she said breathlessly, “I don’t know how you did it; how you got into my home—”
   “—But you do.”
“No.” She shook her head. “I don’t. I really don’t.”
He studied the fear in her eyes with a calm look in his. “Then ask me.”
She swallowed away a lump as she searched his eyes.
“Ask me, Lilly, and I’ll tell you.”
She slowly shook her head as she pressed back tighter against the door, realizing that she really didn’t want to know…not understanding why that revelation would terrify her. “It-It doesn’t really matter now. I just want you to go—”
“—Why are you afraid to ask, Lilly? Do you fear you might not like the answer?”
   “I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, but you do,” he said, quietly. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.” His gaze dropped to stare at her lips. “For you know what I am—a fact you have diligently avoided to accept. And I have allowed it, for I had hoped that you’d come to me out of your own. But you haven’t,” his gaze rose as he looked into her big eyes, “and my patience has reached its limits.”

Earth Angel Excerpt

It was silent in his bedroom as he continued to gaze into her eyes. Sarah saw the confusion clear as day in his—and they were amazing. She really didn’t have any answers to any of them, except for maybe the most obvious after experiencing something like this.

“Because I wanted to,” she said.

He was surprised that she answered his unspoken question. Apparently, she had the gift of reading his mind while he was at a loss to do the same with her—and she was human! He was now beginning to believe that Sarah was far more than a mere mortal.

“I-I don’t know why,” she added. “I’ve-I’ve never done anything like this before. I hope you can believe me.”

“I do. Without question,” he assured her.

She quieted as she searched his eyes and must’ve found what she was looking for because she nodded, simultaneously pulling free of his gently hands. “Anyway, what had happened, happened because...I wanted it to happen.”

He saw her suddenly frown as if she wasn’t certain if she gave the correct answer.

“At least, I believe I haven’t ever done this before.” Then she raised her eyes and looked into his. “I...I can’t explain it. All I can tell you is that I...just wanted to.”

“Which makes it that much more invaluable to me in ways you, for the moment, can’t begin to understand, Sarah,” he said quietly.

She frowned in confusion. “How-How do you know my name?”

He smiled, warmly. “I guessed.”

He was being silly, of course. The chances of him guessing her name correctly the first try was next to nil, she thought. “I just need to know...have we met before today?”

He looked strangely at her and it unnerved her. “If we had, I’d like to think you’d remember me.”

Well, he answered that. They’d never met before.

“I don’t even remember how I got here,” she said as she gazed briefly around his tenement. Then another thought hit her and she frowned again as she looked up and searched his eyes. “What...what did you mean by that?”

“Mean by what?”

“That I can’t begin to understand how what has happened is much more valuable to you than I could know?”

“I want to tell you, Sarah. Believe me, I do. I want to tell you everything,” he said, heartfelt. “But for now I’m asking you to trust me when I tell you that what you just made happen was never meant to be. You possess certain ...powers. Above all else, you must know, I honor what you’ve given so unselfishly to me.”

She looked strangely at him. “Powers? That’s just crazy talk.”

“No,” he said so resolutely that she paused. “It’s not.”

She searched his eyes and swallowed. He was being serious! “Oh, then I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree,” she said with a nervous giggle, but she slowly quieted when he didn’t join her. It’s hard to keep something lighthearted when the person you’re talking to is anything but! She looked down and popped her shoulders a few times. “Anyway, you have a right to your opinion if that makes you happy.”

“It does because it’s the truth, and I value truth above all else.”

She raised her head and looked at him a little perturbed. “Well, since we’re being truthful, I hope you don’t think that what had just happened is commonplace with me.”

“I don’t. And I’m never wrong when it comes to judgment of character.”

“Must be nice to be so...confident.”

He slowly smiled. “Arrogant, you mean?”

She cleared her throat, shook back her hair and jutted out her chin. “And you’re wrong about at least one thing.”

“I am?”

“Yeah,” she said, nodding. Then she looked away. “Because it wasn’t totally unselfish.”

His gaze lowered to her shining lips. His thumb gently followed the plump, soft cushion in quiet awe, and he felt her tremble by his touch. “You said as much when you confessed that you did what you did because you wanted it to happen,” he whispered as his gaze seemed glued to her lips. “You—” He paused. Then he raised his gaze to look into her curious and extraordinary eyes. “You’re the first person to make me feel...like a man.”
